Could Hastings be a national showcase for renewable energy technologies? NICK HANNA has an exciting new proposal
Britain is currently a hotbed of innovation for marine renewables, with 25% of the world’s wave technologies being developed here. Britain is also currently a world leader in offshore wind installations.
There are no education or interpretation centres for marine renewables or offshore wind in Britain. Both of these sectors are very important to the future of renewable energy in this country.
We propose creating an education and visitor centre for renewable energy on Hastings pier, focusing on offshore wind, wave and tidal energy.
Between 2012-2016, construction will take place of the Hastings Array wind farm. This is one of only two wind farms on the south coast of England, and will consist of over 100 turbines.
It’s possible that the Hastings Array will deploy the largest wind turbines in the world — Clipper Windpower’s 10MW Britannia turbines, which have been developed with support from the Department for Energy and Climate Change (DECC).
This is a unique opportunity for a project of national and even international significance on renewable energy. It would serve as an interpretation and education centre and as a resource which would stimulate interest in engineering and other green career choices.
