Ore Community Land Trust news
Ore Community Land Trust (OCLT) is devoted to saving and enhancing green space in the Upper Ore Valley. Tony Polain, chair of OCLT, contacted HOT with news of their AGM report and latest plans. Zelly Restorick writes.
Ore Community Land Trust was formed in 2009 by Ore Valley Action with the purpose of seeking to acquire land in the Upper Ore Valley to save and enhance urban woodland and green space for community use and to protect animal habitat.
The Trust has completed their transition to a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO), which will better enable them to raise funds and acquire land – and make their vision a reality.

Their plans include:
- recovering sections of Speckled Wood that have been used historically for allotments into land for community food growing
- designing a new Ore Village Green
- transferring the green spaces in the Ore Valley from HBC to OCLT
- buying a container as a volunteer base in Speckled Wood (by the way, the Trust needs more volunteers)
- working with The Conservation Volunteers to organise some green gyms in Speckled Wood. The first one will be for women
- producing a leaflet for the footpaths (thanks to money from Hastings Old Town Winkle Club)
- a walking festival, including the Ore Trails
- removing Japanese knotweed
- keeping the natural spaces rubbish-free
- continuing collaboration with Heart of Hastings Community Land Trust re the old power station site
- ongoing work on the Speckled Wood section of the Ore Valley Greenway.

It’s really exciting and vital to the health of the Ore community that so much of the green space between Victoria Avenue and Ore Station, via Speckled Wood, is now protected from damaging development. I love walking in this area, and, when the Greenway is done, I look forward to being able to cycle through this route too.

Hi Zelly/HOT
Thank you for a great article on our activities.
We are hoping that the first land transfer in Speckled Wood from HBC to us will take place next week
