A welcome upgrade for the seafront?
The leaseholder of the amusement park facilities on the Stade by the Old Town (from the Stade Hall to the western end of the miniature railway) is proposing to spend large sums of money in improving the whole area and, what is more, is consulting with local people before deciding finally on these plans. Hastings Old Town Residents Association talked to HOT’s Chris Cormack.
Among the hoped for outcomes are:
- Better access to the beach, especially for the disabled and families with young children;
- A ‘healthier’ boating lake with landscaped islands and fountains;
- Lots of extra seating and free spaces for families;
- Better planting and paving;
- An extended miniature railway; and
- A willingness to listen to local people.
The architect’s plans can be debated and discussed before a planning application is made at a special open meeting at 7pm on Friday 28 September at the Stade Hall. The architects will make a presentation of their ideas and listen to your comments – your chance to have a say!
Also, the Winkle Club fisherman’s charity and the Hastings Old Town Residents’ Association (HOTRA) are working to secure an upgrade for Winkle Island, situated at the beginning of Rock a Nore opposite the Jerwood Gallery. East Sussex County Council and the Hastings Borough Council have already agreed to improve the paving and bollards to prevent illegal parking and a fundraising effort is underway for the rest. The flagpole plinth will remain but the wooden seats will be replaced. Two interpretation boards will explain the Winkle Club’s history and promote fundraising and grants for local good causes.
