A new roof is among many improvements to the Alexandra Park greenhouse in the 10 years since restoration work got under way.

Greenhouse group plans heritage open day

Alexandra Park Greenhouse Group, now in its 10th year, will celebrate its Heritage Open Day on Sunday 17 September by putting the spotlight on famous people who have helped to put Hastings on the map. Press officer Lynda Foy reports, photos by Colin Foy.

On Sunday, September 17, the Alexandra Park Greenhouse Group (APGG) will host its Heritage Open Day with storyboards about the lives of those involved with the park or the borough. They include Robert Marnock, who designed the park, and Marianne North, the well-known Victorian botanist and botanical artist, who was born in Hastings.

The event will also feature former borough engineer Sidney Little, who designed staging at the greenhouse, developed the seafront and improved the borough’s water supply. There will be a look at the work by greenhouse volunteers and a tribute to Richardson’s of Darlington, the company that manufactured the 1930’s greenhouse. Entry is free, plants and shrubs will be on sale.

Storyboards for the event, which runs from 10.30am to 4.30pm, have been made with a £750 grant from Sussex Gardens Trust.

10 years and counting

It is 10 years since volunteers cleared the site of rubbish and overgrowth to start turning it into a vibrant community hub. Thanks to donations and grants, the greenhouse now boasts a new roof, renovated iron work and guttering, a new floor, an electricity supply and new seating.  The venue near the Pump House Cafe now hosts talks, workshops, exhibitions and children’s activities.

Linda Pearson, APGG chairman, said the Heritage Open Day event aimed to look back, but also forward. “We want people to come to give ideas about what to do in the future,” she added.

APGG is looking for a new treasurer and someone to organise events at the greenhouse. Contact us by email or on 07949 829168. See also our website.
