Give Credit to the Credit Union!
To celebrate International Credit Union Day on 21st October, Hastings and Rother Credit Union is CrowdFunding to get their vital, affordable lending and popular savings options to more people. Erica Smith sings the praises of this essential service.
Credit Unions offer an alternative to loan sharks and payday lenders for people on low incomes. They lend to people that the high street banks won’t, and they help people manage financially and rebuild their credit history. They also offer savings products for everyone, including children.
During lockdown last year, Hastings and Rother Credit Union (HRCU) was a lifesaver for the ATownExploresABook festival that I am involved with. In the early stages of lockdown, it was impossible to open a community bank account. HRCU came to our rescue because it offers a simple and basic banking service for small commuity groups. They held the money that we raised via our Crowdfunder and the small grants that we were successful in applying for. HRCU staff and volunteers understand the challenges faced by individuals on a low budget and the needs of community groups too.
HRCU is currently updating their systems to offer a full package of online banking services, but it also needs to ensure that those who really need the support of a credit union can access their services. This includes advertising to people who are not digitally connected.
The HRCU team are appealing for £5000 to help double their membership over the next six months – and to help make sure that everyone who needs their services knows what the Credit Union does and how to start using it. Help mark International Credit Union Day 2021 by supporting your local credit union. You can visit their JustGiving crowdfunder page here.
