Hastings boycotts Southern Water

Are you fed up with the continuing and calamitous contamination of all of our waters around Hastings? -from Alexandra Park to our beautiful ocean? Come and find out what boycotters of water companies have been doing! Join the Zoom meeting on Tuesday 27 June at 8pm. Felicity Laurence writes.

People across the country have come to the conclusion that there is no other way than a boycott – just not paying the wastewater parts of our water bills – to make our collective voice much noisier and more effective in compelling the water companies to stop dumping sewage into our seas and rivers.

In recent weeks, there has been a huge upswell of outrage, across all media – both nationally and locally. Here in Hastings, Southern Water has been in the news for their ongoing failures to curb sewage spills, as well as their refusal to provide the relevant information to those investigating the causes and extent of this lethal pollution of our waterways.

In this short meeting – one hour approximately – a group of individuals in Hastings who have joined the boycott will present information about the basic background, what we as individuals have been doing, how we have gone about our actions, the kinds of responses we have been getting and how we each intend to go forward. There will be ample opportunity for questions and answers.

We are responding in the first instance to interest from members of the Clean Water Action Group (CWAG), and also welcome others who are also already boycotting, or who may be contemplating taking action – either to boycott, or to register in some tangible other way their disapproval of Southern Water’s ongoing and (according to court judgement) criminal assault on our seas and rivers. The recently-created website https://www.boycottwaterbills.com will be introduced as part of this discussion.
