Meet: Jender Anomie

HOT’s Claudine Eccleston spotted Jender and her mysterious friend at Tommy’s Pizza on Norman Road, St Leonards-on-Sea. With such a strong unique look, more information was required…

What brings you to St Leonards today?
Just out for a jolly time with my friend.

Where do you live?
I live in Hastings, just moved here from Bexhill.

How do you usually spend your time? What do you do? Job? Fun?
Usually right now I spend most of my time sewing masks that I sell online – that’s my job. I also sell various other things I designed and made or found in charity shops, usually I add a little something to them to make them special. For fun I like to dance in bars and clubs but that’s been very non-existent for a while now.

Where do you usually buy your clothes? Why?
Usually I buy my clothes from charity shops, or I look for vintage online. About 50% of my wardrobe are things I made myself tho! I buy my clothes from charity shops mainly because I don’t earn a lot of money. I think high street clothing is usually very boring and VERY bad for the environment and I want to be an example that shows that you can dress well with very little money and without buying everything from Primark.

What are your favourite clothes?
My favourite clothes are ones I made for myself but I have a proclivity for collecting colourful platform shoes.

Where do you get your inspiration for your look? Do you have a favourite designer?
One of my favorite designers at the moment is Jenny Fax. I look at a lot of Japanese street style, although it’s very broad and there are a lot of subcultures, I take a lot of inspiration from many of them. I’m also very inspired by all my friends.

How would you describe your style? Talk me through your outfit!
My outfit is just what I am comfortable in, I like to wear either big gowns or things that could pass as pyjamas, I love the process of coordinating colours. I got the trousers from a charity shop in Bexhill and added frills to the bottom, and I made the top and bag myself from reclaimed vintage fabrics, old bedsheets etc.

If you were to give style advice, what would it be?
My style advice is always that style has nothing to do with material things. I’ve never spent any large amount of money on clothes and I also never buy from the high street – this means I have to think harder about the choices I make when I buy clothing. Style is like philosophy to me, it’s psychology and politics and commentary. It’s always saying something out loud, without words! Personal style has a nuance that expresses things that are hard to reduce into words.
