Doodle Day
Just a short post this week to serve as a reminder that this Saturday sees our Doodle Day open house event at our Silchester Road base on Saturday August 3 from 11-3pm. Chris Connelley sets the scene.
As with most good ideas, what we are proposing is very simple.
At heart, it is really a chance for local residents to pop in to the Community Information Centre (CIC) on Silchester Road to find out what we are doing, to meet other neighbours (and hopefully) new friends over a cup of tea and a cake. And since we are heavily into supporting the local economy and making use of local talent, we will be showcasing the skills of another 7 Streeter, our friend Eileen, a keen local baker who lives on Pevensey Road.
We are very aware that we have not put on any weekend events so far and wanted to open up on a Saturday to meet people who are usually working or busy during the week.
With the school summer holidays now underway, Doodle Day is also a brilliant opportunity for the whole family to get involved in something together, and, whilst here, we hope visitors young and old will take part in a range of arty activities put on with the help of some of our many local creatives, all of which are designed to get us thinking about our local space and ways to make the environment the very best it can be.
Our curator for the event will be experienced 3D artist and former artist-in-residence at the F-ish Gallery, Leroy Henry, who is also a resident in the 7 Streets and active supporter of the project.
Since we started work around six weeks ago, we have built up a head of steam.
We have already met many locals, have reopened the CIC every Thursday and have issued our first newsletter door-to-door, using local volunteer helpers; and are now looking to set up a series of action groups from September.
These take up ideas we have been asked to help make happen around local clean-ups, leisure walks and a friendship group, all of which we are keen to share, but we suspect these are really just the opening shots in of what will become a tidal a wave of good ideas.
So, give it a go.
Even if you have only a few minutes, pop in, introduce yourself, share your good ideas and get other people excited. We absolutely guarantee everyone who comes through our door a typically warm 7 streets welcome.
Doodle Day will happen in the Community Information Centre at 16 Silchester Road, St Leonards on Sea on August 3 from 1100-1500.
