Combe Valley Countryside Park

Sunday celebrations at Combe Valley Countryside Park

On Sunday 18 June there  is a free programme of events at Combe Valley Countrtyside Park as part of National Great Big Green Week. The events, refreshments and entertainments will run from 11am to 2pm. Transport from the Town Centre to Pebsham can be provided if requested, including by Happy Harold, Hastings’ treasured trolleybus. Bernard McGinley reports.

The base for the celebrations is the Discovery Centre, Countryside Park, Freshfields, St Leonards TN38 8FB. The Friends of Combe Valley in Hastings are repeating the very successful event from last year, so that more people can enjoy the extensive Park and increase their awareness of the importance of the environment for health and happiness.

The Discovery Centre is made from re-purposed containers.  There will be a variety of activities for all ages including:

  • Building bird-boxes and bug hotels
  • Planting and repotting plants and seeds for the wild flower garden
  • Crafts using foraged materials
  • Guided walks in the Park.

Other organisations involved in the environment will have stalls, and there
will be a repair workshop for household goods. Light refreshments are being provideded by local refugee communities and other residents.

Budding environmentalists and family groups are welcome.

Footpath to Worsham and Bulverhythe

Transport from central Hastings will be by Happy Harold, a renovated
trolleybus from the 1920s. Other transport for people in the Bexhill area can be provided. (For more information, and to book transport, contact team@friendsofcombevalley.co.uk or phone 01424 539 739).

The event is being organised in co-operation with Combe Valley Countryside Park CIC and their managing agents Groundwork South. Donations from the Police Property Act Fund and local businesses have also helped.

Combe Haven Countryside Park (formerly Pebsham) is nearly 2½ square miles of rural calm. The area has two SSSIs (Sites of Special Scientific Interest) and a remarkable amount of wildlife:  2,456 recorded species including several rarities.  The Park has a two-mile stretch of coastline at Bulverhythe running from Galley Hill at Bexhill in the west towards St Leonards in the east.

Access to the Discovery Centre is from Freshfields, off Bexhill Road. More information can be found on the Friends of Combe Valley website.
