Local community gardens host Big Dig events

On Saturday 16 March The Moveable Feast Community Garden and Bohemia Walled Garden, both in St Leonards, and Bridge Gardening Project, Ore, will be opening their gates to fledgling green-fingered enthusiasts as part of the largest ever Big Dig community garden growing day, Mary Dawson tells HOT.

The Big Dig is a UK-wide initiative to engage thousands of people in volunteer-run food-growing projects. Community gardens offer much more than skills and knowledge about food and where it comes from. They provide a social space for people to meet and get to know each other. Many communities have turned pieces of derelict land into places that everyone can enjoy while getting more connected to the food they eat.

Abby Nicol, grower at the Moveable Feast Community Garden, says, “It’s a great opportunity to be part of an event that raises awareness about the community growing projects we have here in St Leonards and Hastings. All of the gardens share an interest in encouraging local food production and consumption, it’s becoming more and more important for people to have the opportunity to connect with where their food comes from and discover how fun it is to grow fruit and vegetables too. It’s great to work together with other local growing projects towards creating more edible urban landscapes in our towns.”

Discover what is going on in your local community garden. There will be willow sculpting and gardening at the Bohemia Walled Garden, while you can learn about edible gardening and swap seeds at the Bridge Centre in Ore. The Moveable Feast will be sowing a wildflower meadow, painting Easter eggs, planting seeds and offering seasonal soup and entertainment.
