Autism-friendly screening of William Shatner: You Can Call Me Bill

Entertainingly, delightfully pretentious documentary about the eminently likeable and engaging nonagenarian actor, ‘singer’ and most recently, space traveller, William Shatner.

Director: Alexandre O. Philippe

96 mins / 2023 / USA

An intimate portrait of William Shatner’s personal journey over nine decades on this Earth, You Can Call Me Bill strips away all the masks he has worn to embody countless characters, and reveals the man behind it all. From make-believe starship captain to a real-life rocketman, William Shatner has led one of the most unique and best-lived lives on the planet.

And while the actor William Shatner may be recognisable around the globe, the man behind the masks is even more interesting than the iconic roles he’s played. He has lived long and prospered. Now 93 years old (though looking like a slip of a lad of 70), William Shatner shares his wit and wisdom in a new documentary that is basically an audience with the great man. Sitting alone in a huge darkened warehouse space, he rambles on uninterrupted with often very funny anecdotes. Shatner is undoubtedly charismatic, and a decent raconteur. He’s often entertaining, if not always necessarily in the way he intended!

A few decades ago, our Marketing Director, Annie, adored the programme TJ Hooker, in which Shatner played the eponymous TV detective. Aged 9, she wrote him a fan letter, fixing a 13p stamp to an envelope simply marked ‘William Shatner, Universal Studios, America’. A couple of years later Annie received a reply with a signed photo!

“Shatner is such a giant — not just of science-fiction, but pop culture in general — and at 93 years old, he’s lived one hell of a life. It’s a pleasure to hear him talk so openly and honestly about it” – Empire Magazine

The screening on Thursday 17 April 11am will be a relaxed screening as part of our Autism Awareness month screenings, with the lights up, sound down, and the freedom to move around.

About our Autism-friendly ‘relaxed’ screenings:

An Autism-friendly screening is where people can watch a film in a relaxed environment.

They are different from regular film screenings because:

  • the lights are low instead of completely off, so you can still see where you’re going
  • the volume is a little lower than a standard screening
  • you can move around the cinema freely as you wish during the screening
  • you can leave the cinema room during the screening and return without having to worry
  • you can make noise, stim, and enjoy yourself
  • there is a friendly atmosphere
  • there are people around if you need any help

Bring a trusted friend for free:

Tickets for our Autism-friendly screenings are £10 – and with our double ticket option you can bring a trusted friend along for free! Or come along on your own and meet some friendly faces eager to enjoy cinema in a relaxed environment.

These screenings are for anyone who would feel safe and welcome in this environment.

At Electric Palace, we think the cinema should be for everyone, that’s why we offer Autism-friendly screenings.

Thursday morning screenings will include subtitles wherever possible.

Thursday morning screenings also include a free hot drink with your ticket (all Thursday morning tickets are concession rate or under 21s rate).
