The Reason I Jump is a modern NeuroClassic chosen for this special Classic Sunday for its moving brilliance – it’s a film that should be seen by everyone.
Multi-award winning film adaptation of Naoki Higashida’s biography as a nonspeaking autistic from Japan, the film won Best Documentary in the prestigious British Independent Film Awards (BIFA) and Audience Award for World Cinema Documentary at Sundance 2020. This programme includes an Oska Bright short film before the feature, and be followed by a special Q&A with Director hosted by WolfGang at the Electric Palace.
The film illustrates Naoki’s words and depicts the lives of autistic individuals across the globe. Such a presentation of autism provides the audience an alluring glimpse into the autistic mind.
Warm and empathetic, British filmmaker Jerry Rothwell’s is the perfect kind of corrective to misrepresentations like Rainman. It’s a journey into the lives – and headspaces – of several young non-verbal autistic people around the world that’s part immersive deep dive, part primal scream of upset and frustration, and part cri de coeur for more understanding and empathy from the rest of us.
