In February we lost Gene Hackman, a two-time Academy Award-winner and receiver of two BAFTAs, three Golden Globes, not to mention the countless nominations from international film festivals, guilds and critics circles. A reluctant star, Hackman began his acting career on Broadway, just before the rise of a new wave of American independent filmmaking which paved the way for his unique body of work.
The Conversation, written, directed and produced by Francis Ford Coppola also starring Harrison Ford and Teri Garr, was released in 1974, when it won the Grand Prix du Festival at Cannes. A much overlooked ‘neo-noir thriller’, the film stars Hackman as an audio surveillance expert, hired by a mysterious client to eavesdrop on a couple who may or may not be in extreme danger.
