The Box of Delights

If you have never seen this classic TV gem from the 1980s before you are in store for a magical and unique christmas treat! Includes introduction by Roger Limb, composer with BBC Radiophonic Workshop (22nd only).

Director: Renny Rye

120 mins / 1984 / UK

As part of a special Christmas TV event we will screen the classic Box of Delights on two consecutive Sunday afternoons before Christmas (see episodes 1-3 on Sunday 15 December and episodes 4-6 on Sunday 22 December, 3pm).

Based on the classic children’s novel by John Masefield. If you have never seen this classic TV gem from the 1980s before you are in store for a magical and unique christmas treat! And if you are re-watching the series you will love the chance to watch it again on the big screen and immerse yourself in childhood nostalgia!

The story follows the exploits of a young boy, Kay Harker, who finds himself drawn into a world of magic and danger when he encounters an old Punch and Judy man. The Box epitimises Christmas with its magic and mayhem, villains and heroes and ultimately all-round Christmassy feel. Starring Devin Stanfield, Patrick Troughton and Robert Stephens.

We will screen the whole series in the run up to Christmas, just as it was first aired on BBC1 in the weeks leading up to Christmas 1984.

  • Sunday 15th – Episodes 1-3: ‘ When the Wolves Were Running’, ‘Where Shall the NIghted Showman Go” and  ‘In Darkest Cellars Underneath’.
  • Sunday 22nd – Episodes 4-6: ‘The Spider in the Web’, ‘Beware of Yesterday’ and ‘Leave us not little, nor yet dark’.

Journalist Chris Broughton will be on hand on Sunday 15 December to share some of the behind-the-scenes tidbits he garnered while interviewing lead actor Devin Stanfield and director Renny Rye for the Guardian’s ‘How we made…’ feature.

On Sunday 22 December, we are delighted to welcome Roger Limb from the BBC Radiophonic Workshop to introduce the screening and share his personal experience of composing the incidental music for the series and how the film was first received in 1984.

With thanks to BFI Archive for making this screening possible.
