The Battle of Hastings: A Marxist Analysis
The Battle of Hastings in 1066 heralded a lot more than the latest BBC blockbuster series even hinted at.
The Norman Conquest of 1066 didn’t just change who wore the crown and was certainly a lot more significant than the blood and guts, the personal intrigue and backstabbing of a period drama.
Above all the conquest transformed who owned the land and set in motion a thousand years of class rule. The English warlord barons rewarded by William the Conqueror became the ancestors of today’s aristocrats and billionaires, still owning vast estates while millions of us struggle to pay rent.
Hastings Socialist Workers Party will be looking at how the Norman invasion created a ruling class whose grip on wealth and power continues to shape Britain — and how that legacy of conquest, enclosure and empire transformed an economically backward and poor island off northern Europe into the world’s foremost imperial power.
The meeting, which is open to all, will be introduced by Jenny Sutton who points out, “History isn’t just about the past, it’s about understanding the system we need to overthrow today.”
