St Elmo’s Fire

Love, sex, career, drugs, politics and debt all come under focus as a tight-knit group of post-graduate friends adjust to adult life and the changes that affect the dynamics of their relationships.

Brat Pack season – includes introduction by Ilona Cheshire

Director: Joel Schumacher

108 mins / 1985 / USA

The film that triggered the moniker ‘Brat Pack’ in an unflattering interview with Emilio Estevez for New York magazine. Made in the same year as The Breakfast Club and released in the USA a fortnight after the John Hughes classic, St Elmo’s Fire cemented the legacy and infamy of this group of young actors, bar Molly Ringwald.

A tight-knit group of post-graduate friends – played by Estevez, Andrew McCarthy, Judd Nelson, Ally Sheedy, Demi Moore and a sax-playing Rob Lowe – in Georgetown, Washington DC, are trying to find their foothold in adult life and the inevitable changes that affect the dynamics of all their relationships.
Love, sex, career, drugs, politics and debt all come under focus as the twentysomethings deal with shifts in their responsibilities. While critics at the time were cynical, St Elmo’s… was a hit at the box office, and this poignant coming-of-age story will still resonate.

The soundtrack was notable for its Billboard chart-topping theme tune by John Parr, as well as the ‘Love Theme from St Elmo’s Fire’. Totally 80s-tastic in terms of hairspray, neon and subtle shoulderpads, the film also features Andie MacDowell in her second screen role.

Introduced by Ilona Cheshire, Film & Culture Communications Consultant and Music Supervisor.
