Pretty in Pink
A cult ’80s classic with star turns from Molly Ringwald and Andrew McCarthy in a career-defining roles. Introduced by Ilona Cheshire.
Director: Howard Deutch
97 mins / USA
After working together on Sixteen Candles, Molly Ringwald introduced John Hughes to the Psychedelic Furs song Pretty in Pink, and so the film was written. Another mid-80s teen classic, but with a focus on young love between teens from different classes and the ensuing heartbreak, confusion and criticism from friends with their own agendas.
Screening as part of our Brat Pack season, in Pretty in Pink Andie Walsh (Molly Ringwald) lives in a poor part of town with her unemployed father (Harry Dean Stanton), but she gets good grades, has thrift store style, works in a cool record store for Iona (Annie Potts of Ghostbusters) – who serves as friend and confident in the absence of a mother – and has an eccentric, supposedly geeky but cool to audiences, best friend in Duckie (Jon Cryer). When richie Blane (Andrew McCarthy) asks Andie out and leads to romance there is shaming pressure from their
friends to not pursue the relationship – but what about senior prom?!
Until recently very few films captured the emotions of female teens as Pretty in Pink and here Ringwald plays the high school outsider convincingly and to a New Wave soundtrack boasting The Smiths, OMD and New Order. All round swoonsome.
Introduced by Ilona Cheshire, Film & Culture Communications Consultant and Music Supervisor.
