Godzilla Minus One/Minus Color
Don’t miss this rare opportunity to see Godzilla Minus One in black and white on the big screen!
Director: Takashi Yamazaki
124 mins / 2023 / Japan / Japanese
Post-war Japan is at its lowest point when a new crisis emerges in the form of a giant monster, baptized in the horrific power of the atomic bomb.
Director Takashi Yamazaki elevates the franchise with meticulous storytelling, blending tense, large-scale battles with intimate character moments. Yamakazi points out that the original 1954 version of Godzilla is in black-and-white, so Yamazaki and his team wanted to see “what a Godzilla film would look like created with modern technology in black-and-white.” To create this effect Yamazaki and his team did not simply remove the color, but rather “went back to the colorist, and we actually mask[ed] different portions of each shot.”
The stripped-back aesthetic underscores the stark realities of post-war Japan, while Godzilla’s presence looms larger than ever, evoking awe and terror in equal measure. With its powerful themes and fresh approach to the iconic creature, Godzilla Minus One offers a deeply emotional and gripping entry in the kaiju genre, resonating with contemporary audiences while honouring the series’ legacy.
