Autism-friendly screening: Ed Wood + short film
The second of our new regular ‘relaxed’ screenings aimed at neurodivergent audiences, see the story of a low-budget Hollywood director whose notoriously “bad” cult films made cinema history. With an introduction from Robin Elliott-Knowles.
Director: Tim Burton
127 mins / 1994 / USA
Story of low-budget Hollywood director Edward D. Wood, Jr., whose notoriously “bad” cult films made cinema history. With a lack of any obvious talent Edward D. Wood Jnr sets forth to fulfil his dreams to be a film director making ‘Glen or Glenda?’ (USA/1953) and ‘Plan 9 from Outer Space’ (USA/1956). He is a man with passion for his art, if not the reality to make it a success.
This is Tim Burton’s homage to the director of the best worst films ever made and a study of a famous outsider, both in society and in the movie industry, who who ignored the doubters around him and made his film dreams come true.
This Autism-friendly season is curated by Robin Elliott-Knowles (founder of the Electric Palace B Movie Fan Club) and Eggtooth Film Club. Screenings will be followed by informal discussion.

About our Autism-friendly ‘relaxed’ screenings:
An Autism-friendly screening is where people can watch a film in a relaxed environment.
They are different from regular film screenings because:
- the lights are low instead of completely off, so you can still see where you’re going
- the volume is a little lower than a standard screening
- you can move around the cinema freely as you wish during the screening
- you can leave the cinema room during the screening and return without having to worry
- you can make noise, stim, and enjoy yourself
- there is a friendly atmosphere
- there are people around if you need any help
These screenings are for anyone who would feel safe and welcome in this environment.
At Electric Palace, we think the cinema should be for everyone, that’s why we offer Autism-friendly screenings.
