E1027 Eileen Gray and The House by the Sea
This evocative documentary celebrates the life and legacy of pioneering modernist Irish architect and designer Eileen Gray.
Director: Beatrice Minger, Christoph Schaub
89 mins / 2024 / Switzerland, UK
Part of our Architecture mini season celebrating buildings and places on screen, and marvelling in the beauty and power of architecture from all across the globe.
A tale of architectural brilliance and the female gaze, redefining modernist landscapes through Eileen Gray’s story. Eileen Gray (1878-1976) was a creative genius and the first woman to conquer the world of architecture at a time when men controlled it all. “Maybe I could imagine a different house, and then I could conceive of a different world,” Eileen ponders at the beginning.
Composed of re-enacted scenes based on Gray’s memories and carefully selected archive material this is a filmic journey into the emotional world of designer and architect Eileen Gray. When Beatrice Minger was invited to this project, it was supposed to be a film about Le Corbusier but as she obtained more info, she suggested making a film about Eileen Gray and the E.1027 instead.
In the film, we are offered two different types of gaze: the female gaze, which represents the view by Gray, and the male gaze, which represents Badovici and Le Corbusier, who started living in the house after she left.
This stylish hybrid documentary reflects on Gray’s impressive career and her stunning modernist house on the Cote d’Azur and will appeal to cineastes and lovers of art and design alike.
