CINEMA OF EXCESS NIGHT: BAZ LUHRMANN’S ROMEO + JULIET

Shakespeare’s famous play is updated to the hip modern suburb of Verona still retaining its original dialogue. Plus, it boasts a blistering and eclectic soundtrack of ’90s tracks.

Director: BAZ LUHRMANN

120 MINS / 1996 / USA, CANADA

The Cinema of Excess is a celebration of the films of Baz Luhrmann, inspired by Powell and Pressburger’s authentic artificiality. Curated and presented by East Sussex College students we invite you to join our final weekend celebration of Powell and Pressburger with another homage, this time paid to director, Baz Luhrmann. The evening will include an screening of Luhrmann’s Romeo + Juliet, along with surprise extras!

Verona Beach forms the backdrop for Baz Luhrmann’s lauded 1990s screen adaptation of the classic Shakespearean romantic tragedy.

In this version, the Capulets and the Montagues are two rival gangs. Juliet (Claire Danes) is attending a costume ball thrown by her parents. Her father Fulgencio Capulet (Paul Sorvino) has arranged her marriage to the boorish Paris (Paul Rudd), but when Leonardo DiCaprio as Romeo joins in the masked ball, he and Juliet fall in love and fireworks ensue…

In 2005, the film was included on the BFI list of the “50 films you should watch by the age of 14”.

About Cinema Unbound: Powell and Pressburger season

This is the fourth of our Student Saturdays, devised and curated by people under 25 – to explore the influence of Powell and Pressburger on contemporary filmmakers today. All student tickets just £5.

Local students in the Bexhill Filmspotters group have also been involved in planning, writing and recording a selection of podcasts.

Here’s one of the episodes, focused on the influence of Powell and Pressburger on Baz Luhrmann – check out the rest of the podcasts in the series!

The Creative Worlds of Powell and Pressburger is a major UK-wide celebration of one the greatest and most enduring filmmaking partnerships: Michael Powell (1905-1990) and Emeric Pressburger (1902-1988). Bold, subversive and iconoclastic, challenging and changing the visual language of film, their passionate collaborative artistic vision, spanning 24 films together between 1939 and 1972, is a vital part of the fabric of British cinema history.

In our series this Autumn, see original Powell and Pressburger classics, learn about their craft in filmmaking workshops, and enjoy a selection of modern films which bear the hallmark of their impact on filmmaking beyond the pair’s generation.
