Bon and the West

Award-winning documentary about how Bön’s methods and practices for finding compassion and joy, amidst the technological and often chaotic world are being embraced by modern students.

Director: Andrea M. Heckman

91 mins / 2020

Part of  National Cinema Days Weekend celebrating and supporting communal film watching and independent cinemas in August.

Thousands of years ago in ancient Tibet, there existed a vast kingdom known as Zhang Zhung, whose religion Bön has continued throughout history. Today at Menri Monastery in Northern India and Triten Norbutse in Kathmandu Nepal, young monks and nuns carry on the Bön teachings and lineage, not only in the lands of the Himalayas, but also to countries around the world, where Western students now embrace Bön methods and practices for finding compassion and joy, amidst the technological and often chaotic world. The documentary brings to life the evolving manifestations of this ancient religion in France, Poland, Mexico, India, and the United States.

This is part of our Buddhist film strand, using the regular ritual of watching a film together to nurture mindfulness and meditation  – one of the many community-led film strands run by Electric Palace Cinema.
