Winner of Stade photography competition
The 2013 Stade Photography Competition winner was announced as Pete Waldron with his image “Rainy Saturday”. This year’s theme was ‘Stade Winter’ and the three judges – Council Leader Jeremy Birch, Yasmin Ornsby, Chair of the Stade Partnership, and professional photographer John Cole – were delighted by the variety of photographers, student, amateur and professional, who participated in the fourth year of this competition. They were also impressed by the creative breadth of vision shown in the 170 images that were submitted. Cath Tajima-Powell, the competition co-ordinator, tells us why Pete Waldron’s image was a winner.
John Cole describes the qualities that made Pete Waldron’s winning photo “Rainy Saturday” stand out: “It captures a genuine feeling of cold and wet, without sentimentalising or romanticising the harsh weather. He’s provided just enough information to let the viewer know that it is the Stade, but what really sets this image apart and makes it a winner, is the strong composition of the obscured person under a black brolly splattered with rain.”
A FREE exhibition of 40 selected photographs will be open to the public at the Stade Hall, Rock a Nore, from Monday 6 January to Sunday 19 January, 11am–5pm. Prizewinners on show also include Paschal Brattell, age 8, awarded first prize in the young person’s category. The public are invited to nominate their favourite image for a special people’s choice award.
The competition is being run by the Hastings Fisherman’s Protection Society, HBC and FLAG – Fisheries Local Action Group. It is supported by the Foreshore Trust and by a local photography group, PHG. The recently opened Silverhill Community Darkroom has provided prizes of free membership and tuition and the Blue Reef Aquarium provided the under-16 prize. The exhibition photographs are framed by local company Carbon Framing.
