What’s HOT at the White Rock Theatre

HOT’s Paul Way-Rider takes a look at some of the shows coming up in July and August at the White Rock Theatre.

Tommy-Cooper-The Very Best of Tommy Cooper –Sat 15 July

A one-man show celebrating one of Britain’s best entertainers. Written, produced, and performed by West End star Daniel Taylor and hailed as one of the top ten attractions at this year’s Glastonbury Festival. Danny steps into Tommy’s gigantic shoes to bring the comic genius back to life by recapturing his trademark mayhem and misfiring magic – ‘Just like that!’

With the blessings of Tommy Cooper’s daughter Vicky, the show features the fez-wearing comedian’s one-liners, wordplay, and celebrated tricks including Glass/Bottle, Dappy Duck, Spot the Dog and Jar/Spoon. More info and tickets

Oh What A NightOh What A Night! –Fri 21 July

The Ultimate Celebration of Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons! Taking you back in time on a musical journey through the incredible career of Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons, now immortalised in the multi-award winning show Jersey Boys, which has been packing theatres worldwide since its debut in 2005. Bee Gees - You win againYou Win Again – The Magic of The Bee Gees –Sat 29 July

With a brand-new show complete with stunning light and video, prepare to experience the distinct sound of one the greatest bands of all time.

Immerse yourself in the Gibb brothers’ music through the sixties, seventies, and eighties – including hits they wrote for artists such as Celine Dion, Diana Ross, and Dolly Parton. A musical journey through their classic hit songs, including Night Fever, Stayin’ Alive, More Than A Woman, You Should Be Dancing, How Deep is Your Love, and many more. More info and tickets

Wizard of OzThe Wizard of Oz  –Thu 10 – Sat 12 August
Presented by the White Rock Summer Youth Project

We’re off to see The Wizard! The beloved tale of a Kansas farm girl who travels over the rainbow to discover the magical power of home has entertained audiences for generations.

The White Rock Summer Youth Project began in 2003 and The Wizard of Oz is its 20th production, bringing 100 young people together to create a fantastic show. A professional creative team help to bring the full-scale musical to the main stage. Featuring a live band, professional lighting, sound, set, and costumes – this year the production will even see some of the young actors flying! Directed by Hastings panto star, Ben Watson. Ireland- the showIreland The Show -Sun 13 August

Seen by over 250,000 people, Ireland The Show features an all-star cast of the Emerald Isle’s most talented singers and performers, accompanied by the fabulous Keltic Storm Band and world champion Gael Force Irish dancers from Kerry, Mayo, and Clare.

Featuring well-known ballads and foot-stamping singalongs from the legendary Pogues, Fureys, Dubliners, Makem and Clancy, to name but a few. Hilarious stories and jokes from award-winning Tyrone comedian, Gary Gamble, topped off with energetic reels and jigs from fiddling Derry maestro, Richie Remo, and the supremely talented vocals of Donegal singer, Elaine Boyle.

CirqueCirque: The Greatest Show -Fri 18 August

Where musical theatre meets circus! The brand-new circus musical sees stars of the West End combine with incredible circus performers. Featuring the biggest hits from The Greatest Showman to Moulin RougeHairspray to Rocketman the Musical performed in a unique, spellbinding style.

Roll up, roll up for a cast of amazing aerialists, incredible contortionists, and thrilling feats of agility and flair. Cirque is a charming tale with an astonishing twist. More info and tickets

Sarah-and-Duck-Sarah and Duck’s Big Top Birthday –Sun 20 and Mon 21 August

It’s the tenth anniversary of Sarah and Duck, but it is also someone else’s special day. Join Sarah and her best friend Duck as they plan the ultimate circus soiree to help Scarf Lady celebrate her birthday. With entertainment lined up from a whole host of your favourite friends, including The Ribbon Sisters, The Shallots, Flamingo and John, and Umbrella, the party is ready to go! Let’s just hope the weather holds out…

Bursting with all the charm from the BAFTA award-winning CBeebies show, Sarah and Duck’s enchanting world is brought to life by the team behind The Very Hungry Caterpillar Show and Twirlywoos Live. Packed full of puppetry, storytelling, and music. More info and tickets

The New Normal: 40 Years of Cack. Joe Pasquale has been showing off on stage for most of his life. After four decades of nonsense, he’s dragging out his favourite things for another airing to prove that nothing has ever really been normal.
So, if, like Joe, you have ever asked questions like: can a vegetarian get a job as a Beefeater? If beauty is relative, why are all my relatives ugly? If an Eskimo has a house-warming party, will his igloo melt? Why is it that dead people get to ride in such posh cars? If a nudist spilt beetroot soup in his lap, would he have a stain on his character? And why don’t chicken breasts have nipples? Then this is the show for you! Barry-Steele-Barry Steele and Friends in The Roy Orbison Story -Fri 25 August

Barry Steele and a fabulous cast of musicians and singers will take you on a musical journey from The Black and White Night TV special, right through to The Traveling Wilburys with two fantastic shows in one great evening.

Experience an evening packed with solid gold rock n’ roll hits and contemporary musical genius, with big-screen projection and the incredible voice of Barry Steele. With Spencer Jordan as Buddy Holly. More info and tickets

Barmy BritainHorrible Histories Live on Stage –Mon 28 August, 1.30pm and 4.30pm

We all want to meet people from history. The trouble is everyone is dead! So Barmy Britain is back with the hit West End show, full of crazy new characters and rude new rulers from Britain’s barmy past.

Will you be conquered by William? Will you sink or swim with King Henry I? Go house hunting with Henry VIII. Join the gorgeous Georgians as they take over England. Break into Buckingham Palace and hide from Queen Victoria. It’s history with the nasty bits left in! More info and tickets
