Busby Berkeley bicycles
On Saturday 29 September, the Bicycle Ballet is coming to town… in fact, it’s already here, training up cyclists to circle like the Red Arrows and create choreographed pyrotechnics. HOT’s Erica Smith asked one of the organisers, John Knowles, what it is all about…
“It’s an opportunity for anyone who enjoys riding their bike to create a show using bicycles, and combining some clever moves with some great music. It’s an opportunity to show-off with your bike, wear some fantastic costumes and there are even fireworks involved!”
Some of the ‘dance routines’ are quite simple to join in, and for others, there are rehearsal sessions to get the finished event smooth and exciting. If you are keen to get involved with the main performance, then there are rehearsal sessions on Saturday 15 September at Helenswood Sports Centre Hall, and on Tuesdays 18 and 25 September on The Stade. There are also rehearsals on The Stade on Saturday 22 September from 11am–5pm and on the day of the performance (Saturday 29 September) from 10am–3pm. The final performances are at 5.30 and 7.30.
The Bicycle Ballet team are keen to recruit as many cyclists as possible – from 11 years old upwards. It doesn’t matter whether you are a teenage BMX-er or an 80 year old on a Butcher’s Bike, if you’ve got 2 wheels, or even 3 wheels, contact John Knowles on John Knowles theneverplayed@gmail.com to find out more.
