The Spirit in the Dust
The Spirit in the Dust is an exciting dance/music performance devised by Afrit Nebula with Japanese Butoh-influenced dancer Yumino Seki and film-maker Mark French. Erica Smith encourages you to book your tickets now.
Japanese-born Yumino Seki is a long time Hastings resident. She has trained in both classical and contemporary dance and has collaborated with artists from diverse disciplines, working in Germany, France and Holland, crossing the boundaries of dance, performance art and installation. Past performances in the Hastings area include Mankusaka, The Equinox Flower for Coastal Currents 2015 and Hyakiyakko, A Night Walk of a Hundred Demons at Hastings museum in 2013.
On Friday 29 September she will perform at Kino-Teatr with members of Afrit Nebula – Elaine Edwards, Ken Edwards and Yair Katz. The lighting, staging and projected images are courtesty of film-maker Mark French. The performance is part of the Coastal Currents programme and will be a highlight at the end of a packed month of events.
Yumino Seki’s work is influenced by Butoh and crosses the boundaries of dance, performance art and installation. In her work she explores and reflects the inner landscape where the body becomes mere ‘being’ and where a point of transformation occurs.
Afrit Nebula are a trio whose music spans jazz, experimental and ethnic traditions. Jazz Journal describes their music as: ‘Strong bass lines from Ken Edwards and Yair Katz’s lively drumming form a bedrock on which the sinuous lines of Elaine Edwards’ soprano sax flourish, with Dervish-like circular excursions.’
The Spirit in the Dust explores light and dark, the origin of consciousness, shamanistic practice and scientific research. It takes its theme from a quote attributed to Albert Einstein: “Human beings, vegetables, or cosmic dust, we all dance to a mysterious tune, intoned in the distance by an invisible piper.”
The Spirit in the Dust is at Kino-Teatr, St Leonards on Sea on Friday 29 September 2023 at 7.30 pm.
