The Avenging Angel of Klezmer
Canadian accordionist, Geoff Berner comes to Hastings as part of his European tour, along with a huge back catalogue of songs, many of which have now been covered in his home country, as well as being heralded with critical acclaim from a plethora of music papers and Billy Bragg: “Cherish him, cherish him, for there really is no one like him. Fantastic.”. John Knowles writes.
But Geoff is more than just an accomplished and unique accordionist he is also a singer/songwriter and novelist, writing Festival Man, which anyone involved in the music business should read and look out for themselves within the pages! Berner’s songs combine klezmer, punk, political satire and Balkan dance rhythms. He writes sharp, literate songs that make you want to weep, laugh, grind your teeth or kick out a window – often all at the same time.
Berner has built a serious cult following throughout North America and Europe by touring relentlessly through thousands of bars, cafés and festivals and with his weirdly compelling stage presence, he has a strange ability to create fun in chaos.
