Christmas concert ends Sound Waves’ busy year
Sound Waves Community choir present their Christmas concert next Friday, 15 December, round the theme of the 12 Days of Christmas. It’s the culmination of a busy year, as musical director Debbie Warren explains.
This year our Christmas concert is a musical celebration of the 12 Days of Christmas. The format is simple – 12 pieces of music and 12 readings, one for each day. The choir will be singing a mixture of traditional carols and modern seasonal songs.
They are being joined by special guests the Two Towers Handbells. It’s not surprising that many Christmas songs and carols mention bells – there’s something quite magical about them especially at this time of year.
There will be something for everyone to enjoy, as well as chances to join in with your favourite carols. Mulled wine and mince pies will be on offer in the interval to add to the festive flavour. Entrance is free of charge but there will be a collection for local charity Dragonflies, who support bereaved children and their families.
Throughout the year Sound Waves have enjoyed a varied programme of different styles of music and exciting performance opportunities. In the spring we celebrated the swinging sixties with our own strictly a cappella tribute concert Good Vibrations and performed at Beatles Day in April, helping to raise over £26,000 for Macmillan Cancer Support.
During the summer we were fortunate to work with Liane Carroll on jazz and blues music. We performed alongside Liane in an informal concert, while at the end of the evening individual choir members took to the stage for an open mic session with Liane at the piano.
The choir performed at Butlers Gap in August as part of the Old Town Carnival week celebrations, and later that month we took part in an open-air recording session for Songs of Praise which was aired on the BBC in the autumn.
In October we helped raise money for St Michael’s Hospice at The Big Sing 30th Anniversary Edition, which saw 20 local choirs taking part in an all-day sponsored choir singathon.
And this month we have already sung carols around the campfire at Mallydams RSPCA Festive Frosty Friday open evening and performed at the Seaview Carol Concert.
