Period instruments bring new vision to Messiah

On Saturday 19 November, Hastings Philharmonic Choir are performing Handel’s much-loved oratorio ‘Messiah’. The concert features four fine soloists, including well-known mezzo Louise Winter.

Magnetic maestro Hilary Davan Wetton will conduct an accomplished period instrument orchestra, specially convened for the occasion. The accompanying instruments would have been familiar to Handel and his eighteenth century audiences – they are quite different in construction, tone and effect from those used in a modern symphony orchestra.

Julia Bishop, who will be leading the orchestra is one of the outstanding baroque violin specialists of her generation and co-founder of the flamboyant baroque quartet ‘Red Priest’, described in the press as ‘visionary’ and with a ‘rock-chamber concert approach to early music’.  This promises to be an exciting and memorable ‘Messiah’, appealing to a wide range of music lovers.

The concert will be held on Saturday 19 November at Christ Church, St Leonards, commencing at 7pm.

Tickets £15 and concessions; only £3 for 16 years and under.
