McCandless and Charged Particles in Hastings

For their September gig, Jazz Hastings presents leading US jazzman Paul McCandless, a man of many instruments, and the long-standing Bay-Area jazz trio Charged Particles. Julian Norridge provides the biographical details.

Three-time Grammy Award winner Paul McCandless from San Francisco is a world-renowned multi-instrumentalist and composer. Since 2014, he has been re-energising his original compositions from years of solo recordings with the celebrated trio Charged Particles.

Together they will be headlining at the latest Jazz Hastings session on Tuesday 4 September at the East Hastings Sea Angling Association headquarters on the Stade.

Brought up in small-town Pennsylvania, Paul McCandless played both classical music and jazz from an early age. This is reflected in the instruments he plays: the oboe, English horn, bass clarinet, soprano and sopranino saxophone and a collection of folk flutes.

During a distinguished career spanning four decades, he has brought the soaring lyricism of his playing and composing to two seminal bands: the original Paul Winter Consort and the innovative quartet Oregon, which is now embarking on its 46th year.

McCandless has performed on more than 200 albums and appeared with such musicians as Pat Metheny, Wynton Marsalis, Steve Reich, Al Jarreau and many others.

Range of genres

The music he plays with the long-established trio Changed Particles traverses a range of genres including swinging jazz, funky-fusionish tunes, romantic ballads, purely improvised adventures and original McCandless styles that have no names.

Celebrating their 26th anniversary, Charged Particles features three of America’s most talented virtuosos playing jazz while crossing stylistic boundaries and blending diverse traditions to create engaging new sounds.

Murray Low is a keyboard wizard with dazzling Latin-jazz technique and imaginative improvisational skills. Aaron Germain is an inventive and sophisticated acoustic and electric bassist. Along with fiery drummer Jon Krosnick, they are playing some of the most electrifying jazz being performed today.

The group are on tour in the UK promoting two recent CD releases. One is Morning Sun – Adventures with Oboe, recorded by Paul McCandless with his long time collaborator Paul Winter, while the second is Lantern, the 30th album recorded by super-group Oregon.
