10 October: Love Hastings Love Yourself CD launch for World Mental Health Day
The Love Hastings Love Yourself Team have been very busy since this time last year when the first LHLY event was held at The Observer Building. Over the last 12 months there has been a series of pop-up Happiness Cafes, a stall at Hastings Pride and a plethora of other activities including an all-day Together for Mental Wellbeing music and spoken word event at The Palace on 1 April this year. Since then, the participating musicians, poets and choirs have all recorded a song for a CD.
Love Hastings Love Yourself events planner, Sharon Rhodes, worked with Doctor Savage who recorded and produced the 20 tracks. They are currently being turned into a double-CD which will be launched at the second Love Hastings Love Yourself World Mental Health Day event on Tuesday 10 October at The Palace.
The evening will start at 7pm and Sharon Rhodes says “Make sure you get there early – there will be a FREE double CD for everyone – until we run out! Jacy from MIND will also be running a UV drawing workshop in the back room from 7–9pm and several of the musicians and poets on the CD will be performing live – including Kat Lee Ryan, Lily Kim, Pete Donohue and Liz Francis. It’s going to be awesome!”.
HOT’s Erica Smith will also be selling a tea towel to raise awareness about how mental health issues affect us all. She said “Last December, someone from the EggTooth project tweeted Wendy Cope’s ‘The Orange’ poem. I think it’s a really positive poem about someone overcoming depression and I really wanted to share it by printing it on a tea towel. I contacted Wendy Cope and told her about Love Hastings Love Yourself and she agreed that we could produce a limited run of tea towels with her poem on. They arrived back from the printers yesterday and they are beautiful!”
The tea towels will be on sale on the evening for a special price of £6 with profits going to MIND – the mental health charity that co-supports LHLY alongside Hastings Voluntary Action. After that, they will be available in local shops but for £10. So make sure you hurry to World Mental Health Day, pick up your free CD and your discounted tea towel, listen to some fabulous local musicians, poets and choirs, do some UV drawing and don’t forget to love Hastings and yourself!
