Kens Milk make St Leonards debut
Percussionist, Jamie Harris, bass player, James Davison and tenor saxophonist, Ken Beattie have combined their musical talents to create a unique fusion of music influenced by jazz, world music, funk, free improv and rock and roll in their new band, Kens Milk, writes HOT’s Zelly Restorick.
All of the musicians are local and bring to their music a wealth of experience and skills from a wide variety of backgrounds. Jamie played in Trevor Watts’ Celebration Band and also in a duo with Watts, where he received an education in rhythmic playing.
James has been a bass player in London for over 20 years, performing, touring and recording with dozens of bands, covering virtually all styles from jazz, improv and world music through to rock, pop and blues. Notable groups he has performed with include: Ayub Ogada (Real World Records), Julia Biel (Rokit Records) and Rare Birds (ASC Records).
In his native Glasgow, Ken was a member of 9-piece ska outfit, Ska B Dugs, supported The Bhundu Boys from Zimbabwe, as well as the British band, Bad Manners and also toured Scotland with folk/rock band, The Journeymen, playing alongside bagpipes, uillean pipes and fiddles.
And the name Kens Milk?
“Over a cup of tea during one of our rehearsals, James mentioned ‘Kens Milk’ as a name as a joke”, explains Jamie “and for some reason, it’s stuck!”
