Corrie Dick in action

Corrie Dick’s Sun Swells

Jazz Hastings September session features a young musician and composer at the epicentre of a new era of innovative British jazz. Drummer Corrie Dick’s stated aim is to expand the parameters of what it means to be a drummer. He’ll be playing on Tuesday 12 September at the East Hastings Sea Angling Association on the Stade. Julian Norridge sings the praises of this remarkable drummer.

As a multi-instrumentalist who has recorded on piano, vocals, synth, guitar and trumpet, Corrie’s writing is uniquely colourful and his playing shaped by many perspectives. His new album Sun Swells showcases all of this. It embraces the eclectic whims of a child of the iPod shuffle generation – finding cohesion among disparate elements.

As well as contemporary jazz, his drumming features Celtic folk influences (he hails from Scotland) and African rhythms. He has studied the traditional and modern music of Ghana, Morocco, Zimbabwe, Madagascar, Benin and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

New York saxophonist Will Vinson has said of him: “Corrie Dick is one of the most gifted drummers I’ve come across in recent years; he’s well on his way to being a visionary both as a musician and composer. With such vibrance and flair there is no doubt in my mind that he will soon assert himself as one of the finest contemporary percussionists on the UK scene.”

His band for this session features some of the most exciting young names in British jazz. Trumpeter Laura Judd has an ever-growing reputation and already has 8 albums to her name. She was a BBC Radio 3 New Generation Jazz Artist, was nominated for the Mercury Prize in 2017 and has won numerous other awards.

On guitar, Rob Luft is another BBC New Generation Jazz Artist. In 2018 he was nominated as the “Breakthrough Act of the Year” in the Jazz FM Awards and as “Jazz Instrumentlist of the Year” in the Parliamentary Jazz Awards. On BBC Radio 3 Julian Joseph described him as “…an extraordinary talent”.

The band is completed by Anglo-Polish artist Alice Zawadzki on vocals and fiddle, Elliot Galvin on piano and Tom McCredie on bass.

Doors open at 7.45 for an 8.30 start. Tickets are £15 on the door.
