Alice Privett sings
A beautiful, accomplished young classical singer will delight us with songs and arias from the classical repertoire, including Schubert’s masterpiece, ‘Shepherd on the Rock’, to help raise money for this year’s Young Artists’ touring production of Donizetti’s L’Elisir d’Amore on 5 September. The performance will be topped off with accompaniment by outstanding clarinettist, Andrew Sparling, and Glyndebourne pianist, Nicholas Bosworth, writes HOT’s Chris Cormack.

Chiara Vinci
The Shepherd on the Rock is sometimes described as a ‘vocal scene’; it includes an obbligato wind instrument. Another vocal scene from Schubert, less often heard, is Auf dem Strom for soprano, horn and piano. In The Shepherd on the Rock, a clarinet weaves in with the voice and keyboard to evoke the atmosphere of high mountains and clear skies; two poems by authors long associated with Schubert’s music are combined: Wilhelm Müller, the poet of Die Schöne Müllerin and Die Winterreise and Helmina von Chezy, the author of Rosamunde.
It touches on a number of themes dear to Schubert with joy and optimism: spring renewal, delight in natural beauty and longing for a distant beloved, the prospect of early death and the the freedom and loneliness of roaming the wilderness.
