It’s De La Warr-hol!
With only two more weeks to go until the end of the Warhol Show, the artist himself turned up fashionably late to check out the work and enjoy another 15 minutes of fame. Erica Smith writes…
At noon on Sunday, visitors to the De La Warr Pavilion in Bexhill witnessed a larger than average crowd of black-clad art lovers descending the spiral staircase and wandering through the galleries of Pop Art. Each of the 14 Warhols sported their own interpretation of the artist’s famous silver mop of hair. After cramming into a giant-sized tin of Campbell’s Soup, the Warhols stepped out of the gallery for a photo opportunity in the snow.
The Warhol flash mob had been publicised on Facebook, and individuals turned up to follow the simple instructions… “arrive just before noon and mill around the building. Don your white wig and spectacles and head for the spiral staircase at 12 o’clock”. When De La Warr staff first heard of the plans, there were concerns that it might lead to a ‘Thomas Crown Affair’ art heist, but the Warhols were quite happy to just be themselves and stick to grabbing attention from unsuspecting art lovers.
A short film was made by mother and daughter team, Marnie Johnson and Rosie Smith.
