Local Rainbow Alliance seeks artists
Are you a singer-songwriter, acoustic music act, poet or comedian in the local LGBT community? Are you an LGBT artist who would like the opportunity to display or talk about your original artwork, books or sculpture? The Arts Tent team for the Hastings & Rother Rainbow Alliance (HRRA) is hosting ‘QUILTBAG’** – a celebration of LGBT Arts at Hastings Pride 2019 on Sunday 25th August – and would like to hear from you! Steph Bennion writes.
** QUILTBAG
An all-encompassing LGBT+ acronym that stands for Queer/Questioning, Undecided, Intersex, Lesbian, Transgender, Bisexual, Asexual (or Ally), Gay/Genderqueer.
The theme for Hastings Pride 2019 is ‘Heroes’, marking the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Riots in New York, which served as a catalyst for the gay rights movement in the United States and around the world. The HRRA Arts Tent at Hastings Pride will be celebrating the work and lives of LGBT artists, the unsung heroes who through their work continue to challenge those who deny their community a place in society.
The HRRA team organising the Arts Tent would like to hear from anyone interested in taking part, whether as a performer, exhibitor or as backstage crew. ‘QUILTBAG’ is particularly keen to showcase artists of all ages from the Hastings, Rother and wider East Sussex LGBT community. For more information and an artist sign-up form, please send a short introductory email to quiltbag2019@1066-media.com.
HRRA
Hastings and Rother Rainbow Alliance (HRRA) was established in 2003 to support lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people in Hastings and Rother. HRRA achieves this by: providing a voice within the statutory and voluntary sector; looking at the social needs of our communities; promoting training and information services; encouraging active citizenship by LGBT people; engaging in forums and meetings to develop a greater understanding of the support needs of LGBT communities; and providing regular newsletters and information to members and others. HRRA is proud to be part of Hastings Pride.
Hastings Pride
The inaugural Hastings Pride took place in 2017, celebrating the local LGBT community with a parade through Hastings town centre and a full day of festivities at The Oval, Hastings.
Hastings Pride in 2019 will take place on Sunday 25 August, once again at The Oval, with a full afternoon and evening programme of entertainment and events.
