Caroline Macey shows at Affordable Art Fair

Local print maker, artist and resident Caroline Macey is part of the Affordable Art Show in London as well as showing work at The Stables in Hastings. It’s no more than deserved recognition of her talents, writes Zelly Restorick.

The first time I came across Caroline Macey’s print work, when she had a studio at Ore Community Centre, I stood and stared, mesmerised by the intricacy, the incredible detail and sheer humanity, compassion and insightfulness of her subject matter. One could easily stand and stare for hours, always seeing something new. All the individual figures linked and interconnected in a network, as we all are in life.

Recently, Caroline was elected to become an associate of the Royal Academy of Printer Painters and to the Southbank Printmakers; her prints have been in the Bankside Gallery where Rocking In The Free World won the Fenner Paper Prize.

Caroline’s work is clearly so painstakingly created, requiring so much patience and perseverance. Her studies of entangled humanity – our various challenges and struggles, our connections and inter-minglings with our environment – leave me with my mouth hanging open in awe that such labyrinthine, impactful pieces of artwork could be created by a single – very skilled – human-hand.

“I never plan my work”, says Caroline, “but prefer to let it flow from mind straight onto lino and enjoy the surprise and alchemy of the print-making process.”
