Global Strike in Hastings and St Leonards
Coinciding with simultaneous well-planned actions around the world on every continent, The Global Strike happened in Hastings and St Leonards. Youth Strikers 4 Climate Action united with Extinction Rebellion, other groups, families, friends and individuals, taking time out to take action on behalf of our threatened future on this planet David Bruce, local photographer and earth activist, took photos so you can see for yourself who was there – and why. Zelly Restorick, who participated, reflects on the action.

People – of all varieties and ages – were united in their quest that the threat of climate change (already being felt around the globe) is accepted, acknowledged and urgent, wise, appropriate action taken.

One person commented: “I’m not scared about dying, I can’t stand the thought of all the suffering”. Another talked about: “how some humans will probably survive, even though the majority will die… Life will go on in some format or other”. Another replied: “Let’s hope they’re wiser.”

Yes, climate change has always happened – is always happening, whether we like it or not. But the spike since the industrial revolution is different – and although we are not 100% to blame, we are playing – and have played – a very significant part in our short history on this planet.

If the planet is uninhabitable, then we are all done for. Fact. Our previous and current ways of living are no longer sustainable. Change is needed now. All of us. From the bottom up and the top down.

Jeremy Leggett, former William Parker pupil, solar advocate and climate activist:
“I find it agonising to imagine being in the minds of the kids in this short clip. How awfully my generation has let them down. I and many of my compadres have fought for years to save them from the worst excesses of global heating and the climate chaos it causes. But we have been pretty ineffectual, and so many others seem to care little or nothing about their future.
“Time to reset the societal rulebook, and let the younger generation have a huge say in that process, I think. The revolution is not going to be pretty. But it must be a revolution.
“If you think that statement is too radical, consider the Financial Times as an example of our pivotal, pivoting, times. It now argues that free-enterprise capitalism is broken, in its current form, and needs a complete reset.”
