Plastic plastic plastic everywhere.
Plastic Drop Week
Do you buy veg and fruit and other items that have been clingfilmed? Shrink-wrapped? Wrapped in plastic bags? Starting from next weekend and marking the beginning of Zero Waste Week, here’s something you can do to draw attention to the vast amounts of plastic packaging used at your local supermarket. This message has been circulated via Transition Town Hastings on behalf of Rachel Lowden.
Do you find that after a trip to the shops, your fridge, rubbish and recycling bins are filled with pointless plastic packaging? No surprise… supermarkets produce 800,000 tonnes of plastic a year!
One idea is Plastic Drop Week. You and a minimum of 10 friends will do a shop and then remove the plastic from your shopping and give it back to the supermarket. OR at 3pm drop off your unwanted plastic that has come from that supermarket.
If this idea appeals, you need to:
decide if you want to lead the drop or be a participant
choose the Supermarket you visit frequently
let the supermarket know its happening
galvanise support from min of 10 folk to do it with you
“We want to spread this far and wide so please get in touch if you want to be a leader and we can then set you up an individual event”, writes Rachel Lowdon, promoting this initiative in the local community. “The idea is that we start it on the Saturday and invite people to take back their plastic throughout that week.
“We would love you to take part to show the supermarkets that they need to ask their food suppliers not to wrap eveything in unnecessary plastic, etc.
“See you at your chosen superstore!”

And if you this idea doesn’t appeal to you or you don’t have the time or the people, then consider returning your plastic packaging to your local supermarket – or leaving it at the pay point, as a concerned individual or family. Talk to the manager or one of the supermarket team. Every contribution counts.
