Comedy at Kino-Teatr
Having re-opened the old St Leonards Curzon as a cinema, theatre, restaurant and music venue, Kino-Teatr is now turning its hand to comedy. And quizzes! Simon Charterton shares the joke…
Described as a ‘dazzling stage presence’ by The Times and ‘master of the surreal and natural heir to Bill Bailey’ by The Observer, Dan Antopolski brings his one man show stacked full of great one-liners to the Norman Rd venue on Friday 26 February.

Dan Antopolski
Perrier Award nominee and BBC New Comedy Award winner Antopolski has built himself a reputation for being one of the most inventive, intelligent, edgy and unusual comics to emerge in the UK, his innovative shows being recognised for creatively pushing the comedy boundaries.
As a comic actor, Dan has starred as Jeffers in two series of the cult BBC Two sci-fi spoof Hyperdrive. His other TV credits include The Stand-Up Show (BBC One), The Live Floor Show (BBC Two), The Perrier Awards (Channel 4), Time Gentlemen Please (Sky One) and The World Comedy Series (Paramount Comedy channel/Comedy Central). Dan also appeared in the international blockbuster movie The Da Vinci Code as Jesus Christ.
With its restaurant, bar and 100+ seating capacity, Kino-Teatr could prove to be an excellent medium-sized comedy venue and there are plans for more stand-up events later in the year.
Meanwhile comedy writer, music journalist and Hastings resident David Quantick presents Quantick’s Quiz at Kino-Teatr on Thursday 7 April. According to the host it will ‘take in every aspect of popular culture – music, films, books, funny things and famous people. It’s also quite difficult.’’ It is a serious quiz with teams of up to five members and the £5 entry fee going towards the prizes.
And the next day Earl Okin returns with his unique combination of music, comedy, bossa nova and vocal trumpet. Music and comedy combinations may have had mixed results over the years – The Barron Knights v Spinal Tap; Frank Zappa v. Jasper Carrott; all musical efforts connected to football teams (apart from by Chas and Dave). Earl Okin however has successfully combined a music career with headlining appearances on the London comedy circuit for more years than he cares to remember and his October Kino performance went down a storm. And he plays vocal trumpet!
