Rock out at Alternative Music Film Week
Get ready for a bumper week of music-related entertainment at the Electric Palace cinema. From Thursday 5 February until Sunday 8 February 2015 the independent Hastings cinema will be rockin’ out with its first ever Alternative Music Film Week, writes Annie Waite.
A trio of living musical legends
As part of the week of events, the cinema is very pleased to play host to a special live gig plus on-stage chat from three hugely talented alt-country/folk rock scene stalwarts Danny George Wilson from Danny and the Champions of the World/ Grand Drive, Neil Halstead of Slowdive/ Mojave 3, and singer-songwriter Peter Bruntnell (all pictured, below).
The cinema is also holding the UK premiere of Strictly Sacred: The Story of Girl Trouble, a US cult band. You can also help raise funds for Hastings Pier at the screening of the Nick Cave film 20,000 Days on Earth. Cave’s band the Bad Seeds were one of the last bands to play Hastings Pier.
Also screening is The 78 Project, a journey across America to make 78rpm records with musicians in their hometowns using a 1930s Presto direct-to-disc recorder.
Alternative music makes good art
An exhibition of alternative music culture illustrations and animations will be on display before the film screenings from music journalist/illustrator Sian Pattenden, alongside pictures from local illustrator and musician Steve Horry.
Sian Pattenden (pictured, right) is an animator, author and illustrator. She has written for publications including the Face, the Guardian, Word, Smash Hits, Select & NME. Sian has also written six children’s books. Sian won the Victoria and Albert Museum Inspired by Award for artwork in 2005.
Sian directed and produced the Luke Haines Rock n Roll Animals video, and has created animations for the Caroline Catz’ documentary about musician Jesse Hector.
Horry is a freelance illustrator, DJ and musician. He spent most of 2014 playing guitar for regenerated Britpop band Menswe@r. Don’t miss his cheeky, humorous artworks on show during Alternative Music Film Week at the cinema.
Poster design competition winner
Hastings resident Pete Waldron was chosen as the winner of the cinema’s poster design competition, with his winning entry, pictured top.
