A HOT date with MimiNi

Forget Me Not is the eagerly awaited debut single from Bexhill-based brother and sister double-act Corey and Mimi, aka MimiNi. Inspired by a photo album left to them by a family member, the track explores grief, loss and the enduring presence of loved ones, found in the beauty of continuing someone’s story by simply remembering them. Andrew Logan talks to the duo.

When I first heard the track, my mind travelled back to 1989 and the swaying guitars of Chris Isaak’s Wicked Game, but the melancholic sadness that follows here is of a very different kind. While beautifully haunting and almost spectral in its exposition, there is also a good helping of heart and soul in the song, a drizzle of dance-floor energy, and for me it’s a composition that is almost begging for a 13 minute ambient remix by the likes of The Irresistible Force.

So, time for some questions…

How did MimiNi become?
We were both going in different directions with our lives and music, then Covid happened and we found ourselves writing music together, and shortly after we met our now music manager Steve and this took us in a new direction of working and writing music together. Thus creating ‘MimiNi’.

What gets you up in the morning?
Breakfast and a cup of tea!

Who or what is the song about? What inspired you to write it?
We found a poem from someone we loved dearly after they passed away, so we wrote Forget Me Not to keep their memory alive. The song means a lot to us and we hope that it resonates with others that may be going through or have experienced loss.

What musical genre would you put the song in? Who are your influences?
I would say our sound is ‘Alternative/Indie Pop’. We have so many influences…bands like Temper Trap & Alt-J to name a couple, and for Mimi’s harmony arrangements and ad libs her main influence has always been Ariana Grande. When writing our music though we try not to think about or listen to our influences or music altogether too much, as we want to create something that feels like us.

If someone made a film about you, what would the tagline be?
Stop working! You’re on holiday!

Who is your favourite film maker? What is your favourite meal? What place of natural beauty most moves you?
Film maker: Absolutely Quentin Tarantino.
Favourite meal: Mimi – Roast Dinner, Corey – Thai Red Curry.
Place of natural beauty: We love the New Forest and try to get down there every summer. It’s a really peaceful place to visit and clear your mind. The sky is amazing at night as there’s so little light pollution.

What is your ten year plan? Do you have an overall intention as musical artists? Would you sell your soul to the devil?
Our ten year plan is try not look too far into the future as you never know what’s going to happen but for the time being we’re going to release as much music as possible and see where the journey takes us. We just want to create music that feels the most genuine to us and comes from a place of true emotion rather than forced songwriting which I’ve done plenty of in my past (Corey says)…and if our music resonates with people then that’s even more worthwhile. We presume by ‘The Devil’ you mean certain parts of the Music Industry? If so, without getting too deep into the subject, no matter what avenue we go down in the future, we will never give up our control or integrity as creators for the sake of money.

The music business – is it all just sex and drugs and rock’n’roll?
More like self doubt, anxiety and will I ever own my own home!

What makes you get up and dance?
We have our goto playlist for parties which we’ve been adding to for the past 5 years or so…including all the club bangers such as Music Sounds Better With You – Stardust all the way to What a Fool Believes – Doobie Brothers…quite the mix!

What are your most favourite and least favourite things about living and working in Hastings?
Hastings is an amazing place in the respect of how many creative people live here. There’s festivals and events throughout the year and always something to look forward to…what’s not to like!

From Bexhill to Broadway, discuss?
Fingers crossed eh! Although I’m not sure Broadway is on the cards for us…let’s say Wembley Arena!

Forget Me Not is distributed by AWAL and is available on all major platforms from July 11th 2025.

The track was mastered by Felix Davis at Metropolis Studios and combines atmospheric alt-pop with indie sensibilities, layered with cinematic depth and reflective undertones.
