Very poor form from HBC planning department

On Thursday 7 August the mature lime tree outside Gensing Manor was felled. This was only two weeks after the planning application to destroy the tree was passed, and one week into August – the month when tree surgeons decree that the bird nesting season is over. Allotments furore launches silly season

It was Conservative MP Kevin Hollinrake who set the hare running on what appears to be a decidedly silly season story, namely that the government is threatening to sell off the nation’s allotments. Hastings Borough Council has hastily assured local residents this is not about to happen here, prompting Labour councillors to accuse them of “senseless scaremongering.” Nick Terdre reports.

Local campaigners to join protests over Palestine Action ban in London and Hastings

Local anti-genocide campaigners are planning to join a mass protest in London in defiance of the government ban on Palestine Action on Saturday 9 August – and some are planning to take a stand closer to home. Gabriel Carlyle reports.

Data harvesting by MP: concerns over alleged misuse of local petitions 

The data management practices of Helena Dollimore MP have been challenged by the Green Party. They point out that campaign petitions are launched on constituency issues, but not often delivered (though some were) or reported on. How many had an outcome publicly declared? Other questions follow, such as ‘Are these petitions a way of gathering targets for campaigning or electoral messages, and is that within ‘the regs’?’ Bernard McGinley reports.

Bourne chosen as Tories’ mayoral candidate

The Conservatives have selected Sussex Police and Crime Commissioner Katy Bourne as their candidate for Sussex’s first mayoral election in May next year, though none of the other parties has yet done so. The latest polls suggest that most voters in Sussex favour Reform UK and the Liberal Democrats over the Tories. This year’s postponed county council elections will also take place next  May, along with local elections. Nick Terdre reports, research and graphics by Russell Hall.
