Local parties air differing views on the devolution offer

The principle of devolving power from the centre seems generally welcome to Hastings’ political parties but reactions to what is on offer differ widely. In particular, what is seen as the undue haste of the Labour government in pushing for a response from local government and limiting that response to the upper-tier authorities has come in for criticism. Youngest ever winner at Hastings chess congress

Hastings has a new chess champion – Haowen Xue, at 16 its youngest Masters winner ever. Nick Terdre reports on a successful 98th edition of the world’s first ever international chess tournament, which still attracts large numbers.

Public meeting arranged on proposed development on bathing pool site

It’s the year when development looks like getting under way on the old bathing pool site in West St Leonards, and local community groups have arranged a public meeting on Saturday 25 January to publicise the proposed plans, present their views on what is being proposed and invite residents to give their own opinions. Appeal for ‘Joy 1066’

An elderly and disabled resident of Hastings is hoping that a GoFundMe appeal will relieve her dire situation, after falling prey to rogue builders. The need for security and confidentiality is an aspect of the case but HOT has made inquiries and is satisfied that the story is genuine. The victim is known as ‘Joy 1066’. Bernard McGinley reports.

ESCC requests postponement of May’s elections

East Sussex County Council yesterday decided to apply to join the devolution fast track and in the process have May’s elections postponed. A motion in an Extraordinary Full Council meeting urging the Cabinet not to seek the suspension of the elections was lost. Nick Terdre reports, research and graphics by Russell Hall.

Vouchers throw spotlight on fuel poverty in Hastings
