The long bank holiday weekend of May 4-7 was the occasion for a visit to Hastings from one its twin towns, Dordrecht in The Netherlands. But this was twinning with a difference and with a distinctly bicycle feel as 15 members of the Dordrecht Touring Club De Mol were hosted by Hastings Urban Bikes. The newest recruit to HOT’s all-volunteer staff, Dutch correspondent Theo Rutten, reports on the weekend
This year’s Jack in the Green festival once again featured an eclectic collection of groups and individuals gathering to celebrate the pursuit and eventual slaying of Jack, marking the start of summer – and indeed the sun shone for at least some of this wonderful day. Friday April 27 saw the launch of a major new campaign for greener, safer and more pleasant routes for walkers and cyclists in Hastings & St Leonards, in particular a proposal for a new track beside the railway linking Station Plaza to Ore Station and College Annexe in Parker Road. Ian Sier of Hastings Urban Bikes reports, in the week that also sees the official opening of the Bulverhythe Link and the related attempt at 1,000 Kissing Bikes – see here for our earlier story.
The Moors were founded by Elaine and Ken Edwards in Hastings, and they say they have been inspired by the musical culture of Hastings Old Town as much as by the Balkan gypsy music, klezmer, mediaeval Sephardic melodies, Cuban rhythms, jazz, blues, folk and rock that influences their music. HOT’s Erica Smith tuned in to the Moorish sounds.
