A great deal of time and effort was invested by Hastings Trust in developing its Myplace proposal for St Mary-in-the-Castle, only to have it turned down by the government and funding bodies. Executive director Mel Bonney-Kane describes the project and the disappointment and makes it clear the Trust is still interested in contributing to the future of St Mary-in-the-Castle.

A new Bohemian

Coinciding with the re-birth of Hastings Online Times is the beginning of another locally published journal. The Bohemian is to be launched this Saturday, 30 July at 5pm at an undisclosed venue. The editors, Sarah Janes – formerly of Bohemia Village Voice, and Outrageous Decadence‘s Liz Maynard have joined forces to produce an eclectic journal which celebrates their diverse and sometimes whimsical interests. I caught up with Sarah Janes to ask some leading questions.

Pick of the crop

The latest offering mined from Hastings’ rich seam of culinary knowledge is Hastings Harvest, a seasonal cookbook. For each month a local person – food producer, retailer, baker – provides several recipes appropriate to that time of year.

At last we can sample the delights of cobnut oil. This is not only a new product but made locally – the cobnuts come from Kent and the initiative has been led by Catherine Robinson of St Leonards. Kentish Cobnut Oil is thought to represent the first indigenous production of any kind of nut oil in this country for several hundred years. Nick Terdre reports.
