TV architect on lookout for period properties down Hastings way

Are you planning to transform the interior of your old house, but don’t know where to start? George Clarke, architect and TV presenter, is looking for people who are planning major interior makeovers on period properties. With his team he will be down in Hastings, Battle and Rye for a few days starting on Tuesday 2 February and would love to hear from you, as production company Amazing Productions explains.

George wants to help families uncover historic hidden gems, and create fabulous homes fit for the future. “The problem is so many of us live in homes where generations of previous owners, developers and DIYers have wrecked the interiors and left us confused about what to do,” he says. “We are terrified of tearing out features that may be the must-have selling points of tomorrow.

“I want to create architectural interiors that correct past mistakes, restore what is authentic, while at the same time transforming those spaces to suit the way we live in the 21st century.”

The new series, George Clarke’s House Rules, will focus on the design dilemmas we have when trying to achieve a stunning modern look in a period property. George wants to prove that you can create a perfect blend of old and new and still celebrate your home’s heritage.

“My house rules will help everyone answer their most difficult home questions. What should we keep or throw away? What should we restore? How can we make our home, built for a past generation, work for us?”

Marrying old historic property with stunning new interiors is something George is very familiar with. Earlier this year he opened the King Edward VII apartments in Midhurst. The sanitorium had stood empty for several years but when finished will offer 162 apartments and houses within the original listed buildings.

The iconic building features unique Edwardian architecture and medical equipment still remained in the operating theatres when City and Country, which specialises in restoring heritage sites, took ownership of it.

The company, of which George is a patron, is committed to reinstating the main architectural elements of the original 1903-06 building. The best craftsmen and specialists were drafted in to tailor-make everything from light fixtures – an exact replica of the originals – to the stained-glass windows.

Now George is looking to transform homes of all sizes, and all architectural periods, including listed properties. Full planning permission and finance must be in place.
