St Leonards Town Team gets the thumbs up!
Today, Tuesday 23 October, St Leonards Town Team were officially signed up to the national Town Team Partner scheme. This is a new initiative co-ordinated by Mark Prisk MP, Minister for Housing.
The Town Team Partner scheme has been set up as a result of the Mary Portas report on reviving small town High Streets. St Leonards made two applications to the ‘Portas Pilot’ scheme for rejuvenating High Streets, with suggestions for community-driven ways of improving footfall in local shops and reducing the number of empty properties. Sadly, neither bid was successful – possibly because our town centre is actually doing pretty well in comparison to other High Streets that have been really blighted by recession, supermarkets and internet shopping patterns.
The good news is that the Central St Leonards on Sea Town Team is now signed up as a Town Team Partner and will receive a support package prepared by the Association of Town Centre Managers along with £10,000 to start putting some of their plans into action.
The Town Team is a partnership of local businesses, the St Leonards Business Association, Gensing and Central St Leonards Community Forum, and support from Hastings Borough Council. The team have already held a successful community consultation day, covered by Hastings Online Times.
