Cycle path?
Local cyclist, Barbara, has recently written on the Hastings Creatives website about the proposed cycle path through Alexandra Park in Hastings. Good idea or accident waiting to happen?
“I know there will be different opinions on the proposed cycle route through Alexandra Park,” writes Barbara, “but please take part in the consultation by Hastings Council.
“I am a cyclist, but would never cycle through the park because of the number of small children (often wobbly on little scooters and bikes) and dogs on long leads. It adds little or nothing of value to cyclists since it is such a weird route and runs more or less parallel to Lower Park Road.
“Alexandra Park is a work of art and has just achieved Green Flag status again. Let’s keep it traffic-free.”

There is nothing wrong with having a cycle lane through the park, though along Lower Park Road would be better in my opinion. It would be safer for cyclists than the roads alongside the park. The problem would be irresponsible cyclists or careless pedestrians. Everyone has a right to move about safely and should be considerate to the others.

I’m in favour of the proposed bike route through the park. I don’t agree that it is uncommonly dangerous for pedestrians though I’m not sure if there are many accidents with existing cycle / pedestrian shared path along the seafront. I’m more concerned about cars parking on the grassy verge when there are events. It’s very dangerous and has caused some really aggressive behaviours from motorists and near misses.
