In celebration of cycling

It’s the 1066 Cycling Festival this weekend, a free event celebrating everything cycling. Nick Terdre reports on a cornucopia of bike-related happenings in Hastings and Bexhill.

Organised by Hastings Borough Council and East Sussex County Council’s Active Hastings team, in partnership with Active Rother at Rother District Council, the 1066 Cycling Festival takes place on Saturday 17 June in Hastings and Sunday 18 in Bexhill.

Some events are scheduled for both days: stunt displays by the Savage Skills Stunt Team, Rollapaluza – battling it out on static bikes at speeds in excess of – bike decorating and more. Pav Bryan will be giving a talk on How to Be Awesome at Cycling. Music – on bikes, of course – will be provided by La Dinamo.

On the Saturday a series of activities will take place on the Stade Open Space between 11am and 3pm. Doctor Bike will give maintenance instruction and Active Hastings has organized a treasure hunt (pick up a map from the information tent).

If you fancy giving your bike a new look, attend the Bike Decorating session. Or pedal over to the Sustrans tent and make free smoothies.

Just along the sea front at The Source Park there will be BMX demos at 12 noon, 1pm and 2pm.

50-mile ride

And if you’re up to it, join in a 50-mile bike ride taking in some of the best of 1066 country in the Handsome Bicycles’ Historic Half Hundred (more info).

On Saturday evening, starting at 7pm, there will be a chance to show off your racing skills in the Bottle Alley Bike Bomb (more info).

Over in Bexhill on Sunday you can join in the Bexhill/Hastings Greenway circular Bike Ride, a 12-mile stint starting at 10am ( contact Bill Larke on 07746 997193). Or you can take the Brompton Challenge – £50 from Handsome Bicycles to whoever is quickest to fold and unfold a Brompton bike.

At 1.30pm the Classic cycle Group will lead the Local Modern Vintage Ride around Bexhill, picnic included (places are limited, please contact Ray at ray@classiccyclegroup.co.uk).

Other entertainments includes the Cycle Jumble Sale, the Molton Bike display and, courtesy of Bexhill Lions Club, a BBQ. Events will be hosted at the De La Warr Pavilion.

Fantastic family event

“This is a fantastic family event with so much to see and do, “ said Cllr Andy Batsford, HBC’s lead member for leisure. “On both days visitors can see Savage Skills Stunt team, bike decorating with Treasure Tots, have your bike MOT’d by Handsome Bicycles, make bike powered smoothies with Sustrans and try the Freedom Leisure Challenge. Pav Bryan will also be sharing cycling and nutrition tips.

“Thanks must go to Stade Saturdays and Coasters for funding La Dinamo Funky Bike Band who are parading along the seafront and performing on the Stade Open Space, and Hastings Lions Club for funding Rollapaluza in Hastings”.
